Member Feedback Request

We are seeking member input on a topic of interest to this community: the future of RvB Het.  Artemischan has generously allowed more maintainers to be added here, and we hope it can help to infuse a new life.  It has become somewhat stagnant in content and structure.

Before going too far, however, we wish to probe the membership and put forth these questions.  Please respond with as much information as you are willing to provide, we want as much input as we can.

Are you a member or lurker here on RvB Het?

If you have posted to RvB Het in the past but no longer do so, what are the reason?

What are your thoughts on the state of the community?

Would you post to the RvB Het community more if there was more active maintainership here?

Would you like to see the RvB Het site structured more like Shogtun's Lap (with user: tags, fanfiction (year) tags and such) or would you not want to see it have the same format?

What other changes, if any, would you want to see, or not want to see, implemented at RvB Het?

Do you have any thoughts on this topic that have not been covered in any of the above questions that you wish to share with the community?

Thank you for taking the time to provide member feedback.

I'm a member here, and I try to post any het I write here as I write it. I'm excited for a new season where hopefully there will be more female characters to play with and pair off!

I think that's part of the reason why there aren't a lot of posts here. There's less m/f mix and matching to do, and that's nobody's fault, really.

More tags! I'm spoiled by SL and their tagging system. It would be great if we could set something up here and standardize the tags that already exist. I would definitely enjoy posting here more if I knew there was a system like that in place to archive everything nice and neatly.

I also like the idea of potentially putting up challenge/muse-poking posts, even if they're just links to challenge communities where people have the potential of taking the 10_hurt_comfort or whatever other challenges. It would help prompt discussion, and might juice up the place a little.

Unfortunately I'm a lurker, I don't actually write any RvB fanfic at all (the only fandom I've ever written for is Assassin's Creed...) but I love to read fic so... here I am.

What are your thoughts on the state of the community?

I'd love to see it more active, but tbh I'm not entirely sure it's ever going to be that likely. There aren't that many m/f pairings in RvB to play with, unless the RT guys start adding more - which is always possible, judging from the promo for the new series! Add to that it seems most LJ RvB fans are slash fans (and m/m slash at that), I guess it's just hindered a bit by the LJ readership and possibly a lack of outside awareness.

Have to admit that doesn't much bother me; I'm in plenty of comms where the moderators don't do much and there's still a fair chunk of traffic, and I'm in others where the mods post every day and I start to just not see the posts... I'd rather mods were able to dedicate as much time as they felt able to, not force themselves so it became a chore, because then everyone suffers.

Would you like to see the RvB Het site structured more like Shogtun's Lap (with user: tags, fanfiction (year) tags and such) or would you not want to see it have the same format?

I like tags (I'm OCD in some very strange ways about tagging my own fic) but I've never been keen on tags by year - even though I know in a fandom like this where anything can change they can be very handy. I just think that tagging by year has its own little set of prejudices ("oh that fic's old, I won't bother reading it" sort of thing), and I'd like to think it's not beyond anyone's intelligence to check the date of the post when they read it...

I'd probably tag by season personally (I repeat: OCD in weird ways) in case not everyone is caught up - I've introduced friends to the fandom before who read fanfic as well as watch and who might read stuff that, whilst old-ish, may still spoil things they haven't seen, and also had friends that got to a certain series and stopped watching because they disliked the way the plot was going, and thus would rather read fic up to that point but not after. In particular if something new comes and screws everything up you can tell what series they were referring to, rather than guess by the dates. (Like the whole "massively forward in time" thing that turned out not to be canon.) Hmm, I don't think I'm phrasing that too well...

I agree with agent_florida that I like the idea of challenge posts, something to chew over. Might be enough to kick certain dozy muses in the head, or inspire people to write something? Might even encourage people to come out of the woodwork to join in?
I understand exactly what you mean with the tagging by season rather than by year. I rather agree, I like the idea of sorting out what canon time period a fic is meant to fall in rather than necessarily when it was written.

There will of course be unspecific fics that fall anywhere, and there can be suitable tags for that as well.

Sadly, I am a lurker. Though if my muses ever cooperate with me and I get off my behind, that may change soon.

If you have posted to RvB Het in the past but no longer do so, what are the reason? With real life mainly interfering, I also do fics not related to RvB Het, so that stops me as well.

What are your thoughts on the state of the community? I like it as a place to view and submit RvB fics but sadly there are at best 3 or 4 female characters in RvB (and that's whether or not you count Sheila) and the rest are male. Still, I think it has potential to get bigger.

Would you post to the RvB Het community more if there was more active maintainership here? Most likely. But like someone else said here: I don't want the mods to feel this a chore, to dedicate as much time as possible but not forcing themselves.

Would you like to see the RvB Het site structured more like Shogtun's Lap (with user: tags, fanfiction (year) tags and such) or would you not want to see it have the same format? I do like the idea of tags for the site, but character tags and season tags make more sense to me.

What other changes, if any, would you want to see, or not want to see, implemented at RvB Het? Hmm, maybe fic challenges every two weeks or monthly could help people brainstorm on fics and discussions.

Do you have any thoughts on this topic that have not been covered in any of the above questions that you wish to share with the community?

None really comes to mind at this moment.
I've kinda dropped down to lurker in the last little while but I'm hoping to get posting again soon!

Personally, I always thought that we might as well merge the comms. It's not like both a flood of posts that they need to be separated, so I never really saw the need for two comms.

*forgot to add this but too lazy to edit my comment*

I would like rvb_het's tags to be updated, though. It would be a lot easier if both comms had the same tag system.
I like this comm merging idea. That makes a lot of sense to me.
Forever a lurker. Actually, only reason this comm is on my member list is so I don't forget it exists on the off chance there's a new post.

Tagging systems are definitely wonderful. Folks like me sometimes just want to breeze through an archive of posts by rating, pairings, characters and whatnot. Although, tbh, a "year" tag is seemingly useless imo.

Would you post to the RvB Het community more if there was more active maintainership here?
Not necessarily since it doesn't equate to a sure upswing in traffic or content here. Also, most of the work I'd like to submit sometime is gen art. I think I'm more likely to end up throwing it in Shotgun's Lap's seeing how it seems to attract most of the fanbase not already on RT. Or even the dA groups. It just depends on how fast this place moves really.

This isn't directed as an insult to the people who started either the slash or het communities, but it always struck me as kind of silly that there was need to divide the two when the series has a pretty underwhelming amount of female characters.
There's my couple of cents. Now to lurk indefinitely :U
Are you a member or lurker here on RvB Het?
Both, I suppose, though I haven't posted much lately. I try to at least comment/review for fics I do read, though.

If you have posted to RvB Het in the past but no longer do so, what are the reason?
I just haven't written much lately. This is one of a couple places I crosspost when I do write fic.

What are your thoughts on the state of the community?
I am honestly surprised at how slow it is. I mean yeah, there is kind of a dearth of female characters, sure. But heck, just pair Tex with everyone, is there anything wrong with that? Haha.

Would you post to the RvB Het community more if there was more active maintainership here?
To me, that wouldn't make much of a difference. If I have a fic idea and I write it, I'll post it. More activity might lead to more inspiration, or it might not, but I'd rather see more active members than focus too much on having an active maintainer.

Would you like to see the RvB Het site structured more like Shogtun's Lap (with user: tags, fanfiction (year) tags and such) or would you not want to see it have the same format?
I'm honestly not too familiar with the structure at that comm since I rarely go there. As long as there is some kind of tag system (tag by pairing, minimum) then that's fine with me.

What other changes, if any, would you want to see, or not want to see, implemented at RvB Het?
Kind of like with the maintainership issue, I think actual changes to the site aren't all that necessary. We just need more people writing, which I guess means we need more people taking active interest in het pairings.

Do you have any thoughts on this topic that have not been covered in any of the above questions that you wish to share with the community?
I suppose the one thing I'd like to see is for the profile page to be updated a little, to include a posting format and clear guidelines on how to tag or warn for content, and what the expectations are for adult-rated fic (should it be flocked, or marked somehow? Are under-18s allowed to join this comm?).
I do know that there are adult settings for the entry itself.
Below the post window are some options like allowing comments (please do), comment screening (please don't), and adult content warnings. When you go to post it you can chose for it to be explicit adult content, adult concepts or no adult content.

As for tagging, I am currently adding tags for rating and specific warnings/indications like smut, non-con, fluff, au, etc.

Hopefully that will help when you *are* posting an entry.

RvB Het will also be included in the monthly newsletter so we hope that will help spur some creativity in people and get some more content here.

:)
